The Gentle Giant of the skies will make a majestic and spectacular appearance over the Wirral on Saturday 12th July 2008. The Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft, will be the star attraction at this weekend’s Wirral Show. The display is subject to suitable weather but promises to be a truly spectacular event.
Staff from the Airbus UK facility at Broughton Flintshire where the wings for the aircraft are manufactured and assembled, will join the expected huge crowds at the sea-front showground at New Brighton to see the mighty A380.
Wirral Show Chairman Michael Emberton commented: ‘We expect all attendance records are about to be broken, thanks to the exciting news that we are to see a spectacular display by the world’s most advanced and efficient airliner. It will be an awesome sight, an unforgettable experience.’
British A380 project pilots Peter Chandler and Frank Chapman will be at the controls of the A380, dubbed The Gentle Giant for being the quietest, most efficient airliner and the first to be successfully flown on eco-efficient fuel processed from liquid gas. Peter said ‘She is majestic and quiet in flight and has magnificent handling qualities: a joy to fly’.
Expected sometime between 12.00 and 2pm on Saturday [12 July], the aircraft will fly up the Mersey before sweeping low over the Wirral showground. Wirral Show-goers can expect a marvellous demonstration of the handling capabilities of this amazing feat of engineering.
Brian Fleet, Airbus Senior Vice President and Head of the Wing and Pylon Centre of Excellence based at Broughton, who is also a resident of the Wirral, said: ‘We are delighted to have been invited to bring an A380 to the Wirral Show. The aircraft has met with an enthusiastic welcome everywhere it has visited during several worldwide tours. It’s also proving a huge success with passengers and crews alike, now that it has entered airline service - with the fifth one having recently been delivered to Singapore Airlines and another 191 already ordered.’
