The Gentle Giant of the skies made a majestic and spectacular appearance over the Wirral on Saturday 12th July 2008. The Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft, was a star attraction at the 2008 Wirral Show.

Staff from the Airbus UK facility at Broughton Flintshire where the wings for the aircraft are manufactured and assembled, joined the huge crowds at the sea-front showground at New Brighton to see the mighty A380.

Wirral Show Chairman Michael Emberton confirmed the huge attendance at the 2008 Show to see the spectacular display by the world’s most advanced and efficient airliner. "It was an awesome sight and an unforgettable experience for all", he commented.

British A380 project pilots Peter Chandler and Frank Chapman were at the controls of the A380, dubbed The Gentle Giant for being the quietest, most efficient airliner and the first to be successfully flown on eco-efficient fuel processed from liquid gas. Peter said ‘She is majestic and quiet in flight and has magnificent handling qualities: a joy to fly’.

The aircraft flew up the Mersey before sweeping low over the Wirral showground. Wirral Show-goers had a marvellous demonstration of the handling capabilities of this amazing feat of engineering.

Brian Fleet, Airbus Senior Vice President and Head of the Wing and Pylon Centre of Excellence based at Broughton, who is also a Wirral resident, said: ‘We were delighted to bring an A380 to the Wirral Show.  The aircraft has met with an enthusiastic welcome everywhere it has visited during several worldwide tours. It’s also proving a huge success with passengers and crews alike, now that it has entered airline service - with the fifth one having been delivered to Singapore Airlines and another 191 already ordered.

The Wirral Show is one of the largest outdoor events in the country. The Show is held at the Wallasey Dips and the site extends for over half a mile from Harrison Drive at one end to the Clown Roundabout near Portland Street at the other end.

The Centre Site (near Sandcliffe Road) will play host to the North West Air Ambulance Helicopter Service along with all three Army, Royal Navy and RAF displays. Near here you'll also find the cycle compound where you can leave your bicycle while you tour the Show. Here too you'll find the Tea Tent for that welcome cup of tea.

The Show's Main Arena is located in the Centre Dip close to the Promenade and this year includes an impressive line up of top acts including the Lings Motocross Freestyle team - for full details click here.

The Royal Marines Commando Display Team will have erected the largest mobile climbing wall on this site.
